Caixa Econômica Federal Solid Waste Management and Carbon Finance Project

The Caixa Econômica Solid Waste & Carbon Project, spearheaded by Caixa Econômica Federal, tackles methane emissions from Brazilian landfills head-on. This public bank champions inclusion and sustainability, aiming to transform lives. Located at CTR Santa Rosa in Seropédica, near Rio de Janeiro, this initiative captures 450,000 cubic meters of greenhouse gases daily. It converts landfill gas into electricity and biogas, reducing environmental harm effectively.

Turning Waste into Power

At CTR Santa Rosa, the project captures gas that would escape otherwise. It generates clean energy efficiently. This process supports Brazil’s second-largest city, Rio de Janeiro, nearby. By harnessing biogas, it cuts methane—a potent greenhouse gas—significantly.

Restoring the Environment

The Caixa Econômica Solid Waste & Carbon Project goes beyond energy production. It shut down Gramacho and Gericinó landfills permanently. Additionally, it restored Seropédica and Itaguaí dumps environmentally. These actions reclaim land and reduce pollution locally.

Social and Environmental Impact

Guided by CAIXA’s Socioenvironmental Guidelines, the project shines. The Social and Environmental Management Plan (PGSA) ensures sustainable operations. Meanwhile, the Environmental Education Plan (PEA) raises awareness actively. The Waste Collectors Social Inclusion Plan (PISCA) uplifts workers notably. Together, these efforts foster community growth.
