850 kW Wind Power Project in Kolhapur
The turbine converts wind’s kinetic energy into electrical energy, which is supplied to the NEWNE grid in India. By replacing electricity that would otherwise be generated by fossil fuel–based power plants, the project will result in significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions. The estimated emission reduction is 1,307 tCO₂ per year, totaling 13,070 tCO₂ over the fixed 10-year crediting period.
This is a Greenfield renewable energy project, developed on previously unused land with no existing structures, ensuring no displacement or demolition activities. Prior to the project’s implementation, no renewable power was being generated at the site.
In the absence of this project, an equivalent amount of electricity would have been produced by fossil fuel–based power stations connected to the NEWNE grid. By displacing this generation, the project reduces anthropogenic GHG emissions. It falls under sectoral scope 01: Energy Industries (Renewable/Non-renewable sources) and is classified as a Type I RenewableEnergy Project.
Contribution to Sustainable Development:
The project contributes to sustainable development across following key dimensions:
1. Social and Economic Well-Being
- The project supports regional development through improved infrastructure, including roads and related facilities.
- It generates employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled local workers during construction and operation phases.
- Enhanced electricity availability fosters broader economic growth in the region.
2. Environmental Well-Being
- By generating renewable electricity, the project avoids emissions from fossil fuel power plants.
- Wind energy ensures long-term resource conservation and has no adverse environmental impacts, thereby promoting environmental sustainability.
3. Technological Well-Being
- Wind energy is still not widely adopted or commercially competitive in many parts of India.
- This project helps demonstrate the viability of wind power and contributes to local technical knowledge.
- It encourages other developers across various sectors to invest in renewable technologies, increasing the share of clean energy in a fossil fuel–dominated grid.
