850 kW Wind Power Project in Kolhapur
Harnessing the Power of Wind: A Renewable Energy Initiative in India
This project leverages the inexhaustible power of wind to generate clean electricity for the Northern, Eastern, and North-Eastern (NEWNE) grid in India. By converting wind’s kinetic energy into a sustainable electrical current, this wind turbine initiative actively displaces electricity generation from conventional fossil fuel-based power plants, thereby mitigating significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
This is a Greenfield project built on previously undeveloped land, ensuring the preservation of existing ecosystems and avoiding any displacement or demolition. Prior to the project’s commencement, the site held no renewable energy infrastructure, highlighting the transformative impact of this initiative.
In the absence of this project, the equivalent electrical output would be derived from fossil fuel-dependent power stations connected to the NEWNE grid. By displacing this carbon-intensive generation, the project contributes directly to the reduction of anthropogenic GHG emissions. Classified under sectoral scope 01: Energy Industries (Renewable/Non-renewable sources), this project aligns with Type I Renewable Energy Project standards, furthering the global transition to a cleaner energy future.
Quantifiable Environmental Impact: The project yields an estimated emission reduction of 1,307 tCO₂ per year, culminating in a total reduction of 13,070 tCO₂ over its fixed 10-year crediting period.
Contribution to Sustainable Development:
The project is deeply committed to fostering sustainable development across several crucial dimensions:
1. Social and Economic Well-Being
- Stimulates regional growth through improvements to critical infrastructure, including road networks and associated facilities.
- Creates valuable employment opportunities for skilled and unskilled local workforce during both the construction and operational phases.
- Enhances electricity availability, which catalyzes broader economic development within the region.
2. Environmental Well-Being
- Reduces emissions from fossil fuel power plants.
- Ensures long-term resource conservation.
- Has no adverse environmental impacts, thereby actively promoting environmental sustainability.
3. Technological Well-Being
- Showcases the viability of wind power and contributes to local technical expertise.
- Encourages further investment in renewable technologies across various sectors, thereby increasing the share of clean energy in a grid currently dominated by fossil fuels.
