Goel International’s Rice Husk Cogeneration in Haryana
Goel International’s Rice Husk (Goel International Pvt. Ltd), recognized as a leading producer and exporter of rice in India, spearheads an innovative project utilizing local biomass, specifically rice husks. This project involves the installation of a cogeneration unit, comprising a 25 TPH boiler and a 3 MW steam turbine, to simultaneously generate thermal and electrical energy.
Rice husks, serving as fuel in this biomass-based cogeneration plant, contribute to the in-house energy requirements of Goel International. In the absence of this project, an equivalent amount of power and steam would have been produced using a fossil fuel-based plant, resulting in increased greenhouse gas emissions. However, this initiative actively reduces greenhouse gas emissions by avoiding the combustion of fossil fuels in steam and power generation, amounting to an annual reduction of 12,960 tCO2e.
Contribution to Sustainable Development: Social:
This project plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between electricity demand and supply at both local and national levels, thereby enhancing the quality of life for the community.
Economic: Not only does the project provide employment opportunities during maintenance and operation, but it also reduces the dependence on the local grid. This, in turn, fosters additional industrial growth in the area, contributing to the economic development of the vicinity.
Environmental: The project’s use of a rice husk-based cogeneration plant ensures the generation of electrical and thermal energy without the carbon-intensive emissions associated with fossil fuels. As rice husks are a CO2-neutral fuel, their combustion in this project does not result in a net increase of CO2, the primary constituent in greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the project reduces emissions of SO2 and NO2.
Technological: By adopting advanced and environmentally friendly technology for steam and power generation, Goel International not only advances its project but also serves as a catalyst for attracting investments in similar environmentally responsible ventures.
