Jilin Gongzhuling Biomass Generation Project
Harnessing Biomass for a Sustainable Energy Future in Northeast China
This project utilizes locally sourced rice straw, maize straw, and waste wood to fuel a state-of-the-art power generation facility. The facility generates 186,270 MWh of clean electricity annually, directly contributing to the Northeast China Power Grid (NECPG) and displacing reliance on fossil fuel-based energy sources.
By consuming 305,500 tonnes of biomass residue (on a wet basis) each year, this initiative prevents the release of harmful greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. Without this project, these residues would likely be dumped or left to decay, primarily under aerobic conditions, resulting in significant methane emissions. The project achieves verified emission reductions by avoiding CO2 emissions associated with equivalent electricity generation from the NECPG, which traditionally relies on fossil fuel power plants.
Sustainable Development Impact: A Holistic Approach
This grid-connected biomass residue power project aligns with China’s national energy strategy and fosters sustainable development within the local community and the broader nation. Its positive impacts span various critical areas:
Technological Advancement:
- Catalyzes the expansion and innovation of the biomass power industry within China.
Economic Empowerment:
- Generates additional income opportunities for local farmers through increased demand for rice straw and maize straw.
Environmental Stewardship:
- Reduces emissions of various pollutants associated with conventional power generation in China, offering a cleaner alternative to business-as-usual scenarios.
- Mitigates pollution stemming from the improper disposal or decomposition of biomass residues.
Social Enrichment:
- Creates local employment opportunities during both the construction and ongoing operation phases of the project.
