Okhla Compost Plant: Transforming Waste into a Resource for a Sustainable Delhi

The Okhla Compost Plant represents a cornerstone of Delhi’s Integrated Scientific Waste Management Scheme, driving a circular economy and mitigating environmental impact. Established through a concession agreement between IL&FS and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in May 2007, this project harnesses carbon finance to rehabilitate and optimize waste processing, diverting over 200 tons of municipal solid waste from landfills daily. To date, the plant has processed over 265,000 tons of waste.

Beyond waste diversion, the Okhla Compost Plant plays a crucial role in soil rejuvenation. The high-quality compost produced serves as a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers, replenishing organic carbon levels vital for soil productivity. Local studies indicate that a significant 67% of India’s soil is deficient in organic carbon, highlighting the importance of this initiative.

Addressing Delhi’s critical air quality challenges, the Okhla Compost Plant offers a vital solution to reduce pollution. By scientifically converting waste into compost, the plant significantly minimizes the need to burn waste which results in greatly reduced particulate matter emissions, particularly PM 2.5 and PM 10, which are often exponentially higher than acceptable levels.

The carbon emission reductions generated by the Okhla Compost Plant translate into tangible improvements for local communities. By mitigating methane emissions from dumpsites, the project contributes to enhanced public health, improved social well-being, and a cleaner environment for the residents of Delhi.

Sustainable Development Benefits:

  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions through methane capture and avoidance.
  • Improved soil health and agricultural productivity through compost application.
  • Decreased air pollution and associated health risks.
  • Creation of employment opportunities within the waste management sector.
  • Promotion of sustainable waste management practices.
