Biomass based power project by Harinagar Sugar Mills Ltd

This innovative project in Bihar, India, leverages the power of bagasse cogeneration to deliver clean energy and significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions. A portion of the electricity generated (2.75 MW) is directly utilized by an adjacent sugar plant, enhancing its operational efficiency and sustainability. The surplus electricity (10.93 MW) is then exported to the Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB), bolstering the regional grid’s capacity and reliability.

This initiative is more than just a power plant; it’s a catalyst for sustainable development, addressing critical needs across social, economic, environmental, and technological spheres:

  • Social Well-being: The project creates valuable employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers in the local community, contributing to improved livelihoods through construction, operation, and ongoing maintenance activities.
  • Economic Well-being: By supplying electricity to the NEWNE regional grid, the project enhances grid frequency and ensures a more reliable power supply for consumers. This improved energy access fosters new opportunities for industrial growth and broad-based economic development within the region.
  • Environmental Well-being: The utilization of bagasse as a fuel source significantly reduces GHG emissions compared to traditional fossil fuel alternatives. Furthermore, the project minimizes the release of harmful air pollutants such as Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM), Sulphur Oxides (SOx), and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment.
  • Technological Well-being: The power plant utilizes proven and reliable bagasse cogeneration technology. This technology is readily available within India, ensuring seamless operation and maintenance without the need for technology transfer from Annex I countries.
